How Our Ingredients Work

The skin (the outer layer of epidermis) performs a critical job in our body, that of defence and protection. The defenders are made up of 'bricks and mortar', as they are popularly referred to. They are actually many layers of flattened skin cells (the bricks) 'stuck' together by the intercellular lipids (the mortar). Together they fight against the elements trying to get in, some of which are bad (like pollutants, allergens) and some good (nourishing ingredients). In that same gatekeeping role, it also tries to keep skin hydration from escaping.

The analogy of the brick and mortar is used to explain the defence mechanism of the skin

Due to the nature of the 'mortar' being lipid-based, the skin naturally absorbs oil based ingredients better than water based ingredients. Take Vitamin C as an example. It is a well-known water-based ingredient that challenges many formulators who try to balance stability with skin absorption. The size of the molecules also dictate whether some ingredients have a chance of absorption or not. Then, there is the pH of the ingredients that also play a role. Formulators use emulsifiers to bind the water based and oil based ingredients together. Then there are other additives used to improve texture and preserve the products for shelf life. This is in essence, the basic method of cosmetic formulation.

The Delivery System

A magnified photo of the transformed bentonite. It has a high resemblance to a 3D image of the skin

But there are highly technical methods of formulation too. They use advanced delivery systems such as liposomes, fermentations, cell cultures, lysates, peptides, and others. At Skin Diligent, a variety of innovative delivery systems are used.

One of the advanced delivery systems is a modified bentonite clay. Humble but mighty. It looks just like the brick and mortar of our skin, with the lamellar sheets of bentonite looking like the flattened skin cells and the active ingredients sliding around the sheets looking like the mortar. They protect the active ingredients and once applied on the skin, the technology releases the active ingredients slowly.

In the case of acne-prone skin, the clay absorbs the oxidised sebum and replaces it with the active oils in the formula. Bentonite is also known for its antimicrobial properties among other benefits.

For emulsion, we use a cutting edge innovative cold emulsifier.  Traditionally, emulsion means high energy consumption as the mixing phases require a high temperature for the oil and water to mix. Our cold emulsion technology cuts energy consumption during formulation by 100 from 40kW/h to 0.4kW/h.

Another example of our advanced system is a lysate that plays the role of a quorum sensor. A molecule that has been extracted from the Noni plant and grown in a biotech lab, 100% natural, has the ability to control the population of certain bacteria on the skin. Quorum sensing is similar to a traffic light system; it gives green light for certain bacteria to grow in population and red light for the pathogenic ones.

And of course, we also use fermentation and unique active ingredients such as a pioneer probiotic strain, the only lipid based vitamin C and rare botanical ingredients.
